Clone selection of grapes

Brief information on the Programm:

Clone selection of the grapes is the method of individual selection of spontaneous propagation of bud mutation, chimera and modification, it can also promote the improvement of the varieties to reveal the best clones being lack of shortages and prevailing the basis variety. The method mainly depends on ability of the grape to give mutation, according to which the base of vegetable organism (genotype) is selected and transferred to generation to generation by vegetable reproduction. Various qualities can be subjected to changes (morphological, physiological, biochemical). It can occur spontaneously both under the effects of external conditions and due to changing of rhythm of ziteombryonic processes and metabolism.
The productivity of clone improvement of the varieties is increase because of the combination with mass and phytosanitary selections. In comparison with hybridization and introduction (import) clone selection is economically the most profitable.

Background:

The works on clone selection for local grape variety “ARENI” will be performed, which is in great demand. “ARENI” is distinguished by varieties of clones, the number of which exceeds more than several dozens. The clones are differed from each other by the great growth, productivity, variety, sizes of clusters and fruit, saccharine, disease free. Such kind of clone variety, as “ARENI” wasn’t revealed for any of those ones being refined in the Republic.

Objectives:

- to reveal the best clone varieties of “ARENI” by its qualitative and quantities characteristics:

- to create super elite high –effective clones.

Targets:

- thorough investigation of seed-beds:

- testing of negative ( low productivity, small-sized (fine) fruit, sickness, ridiculous forms) and positive ( revealing high-yield, high-quality plants) characteristics;

The selection of clones by the following parameters:

- high and regular yielding together with high-quality of the harvest;

- the best growth of plants together with desirable results of the harvest quality;

- preparation of shoots;

- the growing of grafts;

- application of clones in experimental and selection fields;

- gradual selection of the best varieties.

The Terms of Implementation: The work should be performed during 3-4 years taking into account the farmer tests.

Average Cost of the Proposal: 8-10000 US dollars should be required yearly for the implementation of the Program.

Results and Economical Profits: By gradual selection of the best plant varieties, 5-6% of the selected plants will have mutation and modification protoclones being characterized by high productivity and high-quality paramours. Super elite maternal plants will provide the Republic with pure varieties, high-quality, disease-free planting materials according to which the productivity will be increased several times.
