Properties of the New Variety of Apricot “Arami”

Apricot tree occupies the second place in Armenia yielding only to apple-tree. Being the plant of the temperate zone it is widely spread in Ararat valley and its foothills regions. It is grown at the height up to 1500 m above sea-level in the southern mountainsides and in areas having protective microclimate.
One of the most peculiar properties of the apricot is its rapid powerful growing, early ripening and fruit-bearing.

Apricot trees start for bearing fruits in 3-4 years of the planting when exposed to grafting and in 5-6 years they give industrial crop in amount 50-100kg from each tree. Later it is possible to take approximately 200 kg and in certain cases about 500 kg of the harvest. Its peculiarity is that it lives long and can give fruits during a century (100 years).

Apricot – is an early ripening valuable fruit variety. It is rich with vitamins A and C, biologically active carotin. It contains citric and apple acids, series of amino acids. The pulp is full of mineral salts, including ferrum oxide which is found in hemoglobin, calcium acid – for forming of tissues.

The apricot also contains a lot of microelements – copper, Zink and others. Due to the content of sugar and pectin, a pleasant taste and smell, the apricot can be used for various technical pretreatments. The stone cores of all varieties can be used in food industry as a substitute for almonds.

There are a lot of forms and varieties of the Armenian apricot. It is appeared to be specific because of the following properties: the terms of ripening, the shape, sizes, and color, and chemical composition, gustatory and biological characteristics.

According to the terms of ripening the Armenian varieties of apricot are divided into 3 groups:

- early ripening –in the middle of June “yellow nekhchvanik”,

- middle ripening – the third decade of June – “Yerevani”, “Khosroveni”, “Sateni”

- late ripening – 3-rd decade of July up to the first decade of August – “Hamben” (white apricot), “Yevondi” (Abutalibi).

There are two main requirements for the apricot selection: to get the varieties which bloom late in order to prevent late spring frosts, late-ripening to lengthen the terms of the fruits ripening.

Standard varieties of fruits being divided into districts being ripening from the 3-rd decade of July till the 1-st decade of August.

Taking into consideration the above the variety was discovered and selected which belongs to the group of white apricots still unknown and nameless. It was conditionally named “Arami”.

Description of the variety:

The tree is one of the medium sizes with fewer crowns. The height is 7 m and the crown diameter is 6, 5 m. The branching is strong, annual branches are colored; the leaves are large and round-shaped. The fruit stem is light wine-red and narrowed. The leaf lamina is of average thickness, base is straight, and the sides are of the shape of saw. It is dark green; the color of the main vein is slightly double. The apricot differs from other varieties by its large leaves.

The fruit is of the medium size, the weight is 35-40 g, round shaped and broad top the furrow is fine, the peel is thick and hard. It is not peeled off the pulp, the color is yellow and white, and from the sun side it is weak of rosy. The pulp is separated from the stone. It is soft, crisp, cream-colored, the juicy is poor, when fully ripened it is very sweet.

The stone is of the medium size, round-shaped with slightly shape top, the color is brown, the core is very full Pollination: varieties – “Yerevani”, “Sateni”, “Khosroveni”, “Hamban”. It has the tendency to self-fertilization.

The positive advantages of the variety: it suffers less from porous strip, productivity is higher and stable. The fruits are ripened in September 5-20, they can remain in trees long. They are not afraid of winds.
