Ecological Consequences of the Second World War in the USSR and Europe
Категория: Окружающая среда | Новость от: Admin | 22-11-2005

Human history has about 15 thousand wars and military conflicts during of which 4 milliard people have been lost. The humanity lived at peace for about 300 years against five thousand years of the history of civilization.

As a rule the wars haven’t been directed to cause damages to the environment. It was only the results of the most perceptible through sometimes inevitable military operations. This aspect of the wars has escaped researchers’ attention. Only over the last years environmental consequences of the wars became the subject of serious analysis. If during the First World War about 1,5 % of woods have been destroyed in France, then during the Second World War it was equal to 4%.
If the First World War was waged in Europe at the area of 200 thousand km2, then the Second one was spread all over 3, 3 million km2.

Environmental damages of the Second World War are the following: destruction of agriculture lands, crop areas and forests in the USSR, Poland, Norway and other European countries; flooding of lowlands (about 17% of the arable has been flooded by sea-water in Holland); radioactive contamination of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; ecosystems collapse on many islands of the Pacific Ocean; increased use of natural resources. The Second World War losses were estimated at around 54% of industry and 38% of agriculture injuring dozens of the developed countries. (Australia, Czechoslovakia, Finland, FRG, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland).

War consequences impact on environment in many forms. It is inevitable for the growth of areas being in military actions.

During the Second World War about 22, 6 million km2 of the area has been exposed to military operations. The remnants of the military operations, so called “war echo” are one of the serious types of the environment damage.

The Second World War revealed that as a result of military operations not only people and their created values were lost, but also environment was ruined.

Causing damage to the nature as inorganic part of its body the man finally injured himself.

English scientist F. Barnaby said: “It is true that the war had always caused ruins and death, however, radical distinction was that the contemporary war could cause the most significant and prolonged injuries, frequently beyond of any proportion with military benefit”
